How to Edit Your Game Server Configuration Files

Learn how to safely edit your game server configuration files in TCAdmin and fix the 'file is being used by another process' error.

# How to Edit Your Game Server Configuration Files

At Rampage Hosting, some game server configuration files cannot be edited while the game server is running.

IMPORTANT: Always stop your game server before editing and saving configuration files.

Step 1 — Stop Your Game Server

  1. Log in to your Rampage Hosting Admin Control Panel.
  2. Select the game server you want to configure.
  3. Click Stop.
  4. Wait until the server status shows Stopped.

Do not attempt to save configuration changes until the server has fully stopped.

Step 2 — Edit Your Configuration Files

  1. Open Configuration Files or File Manager in Admin.
  2. Find the configuration file you want to change.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Make your required changes.
  5. Click Save or Save & Exit.

Your changes should now save successfully.

Step 3 — Restart Your Game Server

Once you have finished editing:

  1. Return to your game server's main control panel.
  2. Click Start.
  3. Wait for the server to finish starting.
  4. Check that your configuration changes have been applied.

Getting the "File Is Being Used by Another Process" Error?

You may see an error similar to:

"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Why does this happen?

Some game servers keep configuration files open while running. Windows may prevent Admin panel from modifying these files until the server is stopped.

This does not necessarily mean another computer or machine is accessing your files.

How to fix it:

  1. Stop your game server completely.
  2. Wait a few seconds.
  3. Return to the configuration file.
  4. Make your changes and click Save.
  5. Start your server again.
